Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Quietus, Montana. For those seeking hair or alcohol testing, our specialization lies in hair testing, with a network of testing facilities nationwide, ready to conduct it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, sourced from the head or body. Hair follicle assessments can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing demands.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing methods. Preferred by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals, this test replaces conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The main edge lies in its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for substances used within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair maintains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is easy, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels above 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab system. This process ensures that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in a court of law. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a usage pattern over time, rather than assessing only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become discernible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally involve higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations can vary due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
