Accredited Drug Testing ensures comprehensive hair follicle drug assessment in Ravalli, Montana. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this domain across all American cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can suffice in most scenarios. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customized testing solutions.

Lately, drug testing methodologies have favored hair follicle tests. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Adopted by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, and required by courts and probation standards, hair tests extend detection spans up to 90 days, are closely monitored, and resistant to evasion. Yet, urine tests remain unrivaled for screening within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drug consumption by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample length of 1.5 inches, encompassing about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening demand a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to hair drug testing being the most challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
