Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Reed Point, Montana. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair assessments, and our facilities across all cities nationwide are equipped to conduct a hair examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have more often incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for a hair drug test over the standard urine analysis. These tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug use policies, legal entities, and those on probation. The major advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection timeframe, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine analysis remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended profile of alcohol and drug usage. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can reflect up to a 3-month period of consumption history for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is advised. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test outcome encompass four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory framework. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary quick review for drug presence. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug consumption in most cases, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In cases where Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This phase involves deriving drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome employed techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as appropriate. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair regulations and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can illustrate drug use trends over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
