Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Rexford, Montana. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we are experts in this field and offer testing locations in every city nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are utilized. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances based on your needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has become a more standard method for drug testing. Today, many businesses, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair testing to usual urine testing. This type of test is ideal for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary requirements. A key advantage is its extensive detection window, extending up to 90 days. It's conducted under supervised conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. For recent drug use detection, a urine test remains the most dependable choice when assessing usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands offer a comprehensive record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can show drug or alcohol use over a duration of around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and verification. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If head hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory system. This step confirms that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening conducts a preliminary swift scan for drugs. Although Screening is an economical approach to identify drug use in most samples, results must be confirmed to be valid in court if positive. Samples that preliminary test positive require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), signifying that hair drug analysis is one of the most challenging techniques to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The entire testing process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—undergoes scrutiny by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair stipulation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Circumventing a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can provide an insight into drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
