Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rocky Boy's Agency, MT. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have facilities Nationwide to perform these tests. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for testing. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or other customized chemicals.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method over traditional urine tests in recent years. It's favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts due to its longer detection window, up to 90 days, making it almost impossible to cheat, unlike urine tests which are best for detecting recent drug use. Hair testing is typically observed, ensuring authenticity.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method in identifying both alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged chronology of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as they grow. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal specimen quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or for tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weight verification. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase involving the sample's integration into the lab's system. It comprises checking that the sample was sealed and transported accurately, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data needs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of specimens, a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples flagged as presumptive positives during Screening need further validation.

If a specimen is presumed positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes a wash prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure undergoes scrutiny under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Expanded detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection spans in urine tests.
  • Resilience to evasion: It's exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: Offers insight into patterns of drug use over time, as opposed to solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair hue and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rocky Boy's Agency, MT, hair follicle testing offers significant advantages over traditional urine tests. The primary benefit lies in its capacity for long-term detection of substances up to 90 days, portraying a clearer substance use history. Unlike urine tests, which excel at recent drug use detection, hair tests ensure older patterns are recorded accurately.

For employers in Rocky Boy's Agency, hair testing secures a more comprehensive drug use profile, surpassing the limitations of urine testing. The extended detection period provided by hair tests reinforces the reliability and thoroughness, ensuring a safer workplace environment and more informed hiring decisions.

Extended Detection Window

In Rocky Boy's Agency, MT, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window of up to 90 days, allowing employers to trace substance use over a prolonged period. This timeframe gives a broader view of an individual’s substance habits, making it a significant advantage over conventional methods that might only detect more recent use.

The longer detection span of hair testing provides a significant edge to businesses in Rocky Boy's Agency. It not only aids in understanding an applicant or employee’s long-term substance history but also enhances informed decision-making regarding workforce safety and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
