A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test result through four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This step includes confirming that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is cost-efficient for excluding drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a substantially lower concentration than alternative techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
