Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tampico, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for hair drug or alcohol tests. Specialized in hair assessments, our centers span every city nationwide, ready to conduct the necessary tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair examinations can detect drugs, ETG/alcohol, or offer other tailored testing choices.

Increasingly, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair drug screens over typical urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers can benefit from this method. The foremost advantage of hair testing is its prolonged detection window of up to 90 days, supervised during collection, and hard to tamper with, whereas urine tests remain the best for recent 5-day-use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a lengthy history of alcohol and other substance use. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, with low chances of tampering, and can be easily shipped.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is divided into four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating the sample into a laboratory’s framework initially. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary drug check. Though Screening is an economical method to disqualify drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be lawful in court. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a reduced detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, rendering the outcomes more trustworthy.
  • Shows historical patterns: It can outline a timeline of drug use over an interval, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Tampico, MT

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing provides superior detection and reliability. Particularly, it excels in spotting long-term substance use, as it covers a detection window of up to 90 days. This comprehensive time frame allows employers to gauge an individual's substance history more accurately, making it a valuable tool in maintaining a safe workplace environment.

With a virtually tamper-proof system, hair tests make it harder for individuals to manipulate results, ensuring integrity in the testing process. Such features render it a worthwhile investment for organizations committed to zero-tolerance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
