Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Virginia City, Montana. Specializing in hair testing, we offer facilities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for different testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair over standard urine tests. Hair tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation due to their extended detection period—up to 90 days—using an observed collection process that's difficult to manipulate. Nevertheless, urine tests remain more precise for recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an influential method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a prolonged history of these substances by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reflect up to nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. In cases of EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is missing, a similar volume of body hair can be collected. When head hair is mentioned, it refers specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging practice.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Cheating is difficult: Altering results on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs typically require about 5-7 days before detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
