At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Warm Springs, MT. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing is supported by a network of testing centers across the country. For effective testing, ensure 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is available. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various specialized testing needs.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has surged recently. Many organizations, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts, now prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary authorities. The advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive 90-day detection window, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. For detecting drug use within a 5-day frame, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. When conducting EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for measurement is advisable. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, where a sample is integrated into the lab's system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning an anonymous LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in court. Any presumptively positive samples during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is selected from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During this step, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is considerably lower compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples presumptively testing positive are washed as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can determine drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally challenging, ensuring greater accuracy in results.
  • Historical insight: It offers a detailed pattern of drug use over time, beyond just current use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
