Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Wheatland, Montana. If a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in such procedures, with facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required, and testing can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prominent in recent years as a drug testing method. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over conventional urine ones. Those with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often prefer hair tests. The main advantage is its longer detection window, often up to 90 days, with closely monitored sample collection, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed chronology of substances such as alcohol and drugs by embedding markers within the fibers of the continually developing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month detection scope for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Its collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch length of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the prime sample size for both preliminary and confirmatory analysis. For tests involving EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically denote scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four chief steps in the lab processing of a drug testing outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial handling into the lab's system. This step verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples returning presumptively positive results in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is extracted and readied for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate procedure.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, exceeding the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Due to the challenges of circumvention, hair drug tests yield more accurate outcomes.
  • Retrospective usage data: It provides a record of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent intake: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, the cost of hair drug tests surpasses that of other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth rate differences can influence drug metabolites' concentration within hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle located underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
