In Wineglass, Montana, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in this type of analysis, our facilities across the country, including in all cities, can conduct these evaluations. For most tests, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. This type of testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to suit other needs.

Over the years, hair follicle drug assessments have notably gained preference for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now often require this method, appreciating its benefits over traditional urine tests. They find it effective in enforcing strict drug policies. It excels with a longer detection timeframe of approximately 90 days, ensuring reliable observation during sample collection, minimizing deceit. Yet, for the very recent use, within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of growing hair strands entrap biomarkers, providing a historical overview of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it allows for a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for initial screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG tests, additional panels, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, it's advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. It's advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When the term head hair is used, it refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into laboratory records. The process includes checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a quick preliminary test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples showing presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is obtained from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Necessary washing is performed on presumptive positive samples before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests offer detection of drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, leading to more accurate results.
  • Provides usage history: Offers a timeline of drug usage over months, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand, not the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
