In Atlanta, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs and alcohol. If you require a test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair analysis, boasting numerous centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. For testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. This method analyzes substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers other tailored testing solutions.

More recently, drug testing methods have shifted towards hair follicle analyses. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors increasingly request hair tests instead of urine tests, as they serve entities with stringent drug policies. Such tests provide a prolonged substance detection period of up to 90 days, are conducted under supervision, and are nearly foolproof against tampering. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers in the strands, hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug activity. Harvested near the scalp, it provides an estimated 3-month detection timeframe for these substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for testing and verification. For EtG enhancements and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The core steps in processing drug test results in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial inclusion of a sample into the lab’s database. It ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input missing from an electronic custody record.

Screening offers a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Though cost-efficient, a positive outcome from Screening must undergo Confirmation to hold up legally. Samples flagged as positive need auxiliary verification.

In cases of a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is utilized for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a much diluted level than in other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

To confirm a positive Screening outcome, methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used. Presumptive positive samples get washed before needing Confirmation. All phases from Accessioning to Confirmation are meticulously reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Unlike the brief span of urine tests, hair analysis detects drug usage up to 90 days.
  • Low risk of deception: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result fidelity.
  • Provides sequential data: It can present a timeline of drug consumption, not solely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis is typically pricier than alternate testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
