Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Aurora, Nebraska. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with centers in every major city across the country. To conduct a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for alternative analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have recently gained favor over other methods. Employers, judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts now often seek hair testing rather than conventional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation officers select hair tests for their extended drug use detection capabilities—up to 90 days. The process is witnessed, making cheating difficult. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug usage within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a recording medium for alcohol and drug use over time by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month history of alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is straightforward, tampering is somewhat challenging, and shipment is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels beyond 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. Head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of drug test results involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process consists of confirming that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody tool.

Screening provides an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation before it is valid in court. Presumptively positive samples from Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For specimens deemed presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial collection and prepared for Extraction. This process removes drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most intricate methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under scrutiny from both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a more limited time frame.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical usage data: It can illustrate a drug usage pattern over time, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to alternate drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Aurora, NE

Hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests by offering longer detection windows and higher reliability. Its resistance to manipulation means it stands out as a more accurate method, especially favored in scenarios where detecting chronic substance use is critical. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
