Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Barada, Nebraska. If you require drug or alcohol hair tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle drug testing is suitable for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial use, and those on probation. The main advantage is its extended drug use detection window, up to 90 days, with observed collection making it nearly tamper-proof. Still, for drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by holding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strands develop. Gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a three-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Collecting it is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. In the context of head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The process of laboratory assessment for a drug test outcome includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This step encompasses checking that the sample is securely sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and doing any further data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody method.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positivity in Screening require an additional confirmation step.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is among the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Shows usage patterns: It paints a picture of substance use across time, not limited to recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify new use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
