Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bartlett, Nebraska. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is supported by testing facilities across all major cities nationwide, capable of conducting these tests. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair testing can screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or provide tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, the hair follicle drug test has gained prominence as a preferred method for drug screenings. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urinalysis. Such tests are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. Key advantages include a longer detection window, usually up to 90 days, within a supervised collection setting, reducing cheating possibilities. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for detecting drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is gaining recognition as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When collected from the scalp, hair samples can offer a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is easy, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil), nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Head hair denotes scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into the lab’s system. It includes verifying sample sealing and shipping accuracy, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While this process is cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples found presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If Screening detects a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • High difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical pattern data: It reveals a timeline of drug use behavior over an extended period, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher Costs: Hair drug testing is typically pricier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
