Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Beatrice, Nebraska. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses.

Recently, administering drug tests increasingly includes hair follicle drug testing. Several employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are appointed by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal bodies, and probation clients. The main advantage is a longer detection period, generally covering up to 90 days, collected through observation, making deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of these substances, embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, a hair sample can offer an approximately 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It’s straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" only refers to scalp hair here, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. It involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any extra data not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a quick preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most samples, positive screens must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples positive at Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is positive at Screening, more hair is taken from the primary sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptive positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The overall lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can determine drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests with shorter detection windows.
  • Challenges in cheating: It is notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing options.
  • Variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
