In Blair, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing. Our centers across the nation specialize in hair and alcohol tests, including EGT and personalized options. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Our hair analysis can detect various substances.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity over urine tests. They're used by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probation services. The main advantage is the 90-day detection window and the impossibility of tampering, although urine tests remain best for recent drug consumption within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an efficient method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug exposure by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch piece consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is advised. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar amount of body hair may be used. Note that when we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory workflow for generating a drug test result consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any manual data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for substance abuse. While this step is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal substantiation. Thus, any screenings showing potential positive results must undergo a confirmatory test.

When a Screening shows potential positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction phase. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug analysis presents one of the greatest technical challenges.

Positive screening outcomes are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine assessments that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to falsification: Manipulating results on a hair drug test proves extremely challenging, enhancing reliability of results.
  • Chronological usage patterns: Offers insights into drug consumption habits over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: It generally takes 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • High cost: Hair drug assessments typically incur greater expenses than alternate testing approaches.
  • Variation in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," this analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to detecting drug use, hair follicle testing stands out better compared to conventional urine tests in Blair, NE. A major advantage is its extended detection period, offering a larger window of substance detection. This method enhances accuracy by reducing successful attempts at test falsification, offering a dependable solution for employers and testers alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
