Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Cairo, Nebraska. When a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this service, offering facilities across all major cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. Hair analysis can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common technique in drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is ideal for organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probationary individuals. The main advantage is the vast detection window, lasting about 90 days, collected under supervision, making it difficult to falsify. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition for its effectiveness in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month span for detecting alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair piece with around 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimum quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is lacking, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. References to head hair denote only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The test involves four primary steps in laboratory analysis: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial phase of integrating a specimen into the laboratory system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates a rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation for legal validity. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to falsify: It's notably hard to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insights: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
