Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Cedar Bluffs, Nebraska. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialization in hair testing ensures we have centers in every city Nationwide set to administer a hair test. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary on the head's crown, though body hair might suffice. This test identifies drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various specialized testing options.

Recently, drug test procedures have leaned more towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor hair tests as their main advantage lies in their capacity to detect drug use over a longer timeframe—up to 90 days—as they are collected under supervision and are difficult to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands retain biomarkers that reveal a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake. When sampled near the scalp, hair can show up to around a 3-month detection timeframe. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil, from the area nearest to the scalp, produces 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to measure the hair using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair indicates any other hair types (like facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in the laboratory assessment of a drug test involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive results need verification to be legally acceptable. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations than found in other methods (like urine or saliva tests), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as necessary. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conform to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, making the results more reliable.
  • Shows usage history: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, and not only recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Factors like hair color or personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
