In Clearwater, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have testing centers nationwide. Typically, hair from your head or body must be 1.5 to 2 inches long for the test. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method of testing. This option is favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as an alternative to urine tests. It's especially relied upon by entities with zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests provide up to a 90-day detection window and are nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain more precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture biomarkers within the strands as it grows, reflecting a prolonged history of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, amounts to 100mg of hair, deemed ideal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG additions or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. We advise the use of a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four pivotal steps in processing a lab-based drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes entering a sample into the lab system. It ensures that the sample is properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes further data input absent from any electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While cost-efficient, any positive results from Screening require confirmation to be legally acceptable. Positive samples in Screening necessitate further verification.

If a result is positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than those found through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug analysis the most intricate method.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples presumed positive are washed prior to Confirmation as necessary. The process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can detect drugs up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to tamper with, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days for drug presence verification.
  • Cost: These tests are generally pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests", this analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
