Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Cushing, Nebraska. With our expertise in hair analyses, we service nationwide with local centers in every city. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is usually needed. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be custom tailored based on requirements.

Over recent times, the technique of drug screening has increasingly embraced hair follicle tests. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, this approach often replaces traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with strict anti-drug policies, court systems, and parolees. Their key advantage lies in a longer drug detection window of up to 90 days, gathered under supervision, making them tough to tamper with. Nevertheless, for drug use checks within the last 5 days, urine tests are still considered more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Viewing hair testing as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption is becoming prevalent. Hair serves as a detailed chronicle of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand during its growth. When obtained from near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Collection is straightforward, tampering proves somewhat challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. Mentioning head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the primary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the sample’s seal and proper shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for courtroom validity. Samples that present a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

A presumptive positive outcome in the Screening stage leads to extracting additional hair from the specimen for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Tough to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of drug use over a significant duration, not just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
