In Elk Creek, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If a hair or alcohol drug test is needed, our specialization in hair testing is supported by a vast network of testing centers across every city in the nation. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, our hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Recently, the preference for conducting drug tests has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Various organizations, including employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors, now favor hair testing over the conventional urine method. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers benefit from hair tests, which offer an extended detection period, commonly up to 90 days, with a secure collection process. Despite this, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window for detecting both alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily shipped.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen accurately. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample processing within the laboratory’s system, including ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient way to dismiss drug usage for most samples, any positive screening requires confirmation to be deemed admissible in court. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample screen presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capacity to detect drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Harder to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative drug testing options.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the testing process examines the hair strand rather than the follicle found beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
