Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug exams in Elwood, Nebraska. Specializing in hair tests, we have centers located in every U.S. city to perform these evaluations. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair assessments can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more popular for screening. They are increasingly demanded by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, overtaking urine tests. With strict no-drug policies, employers, judiciary, and probation officers use hair tests for longer detection of drug use up to 90 days, making them hard to cheat with observed collection. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain very accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests are increasingly recognized as an effective means to detect alcohol and drug consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by retaining biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can potentially provide an up to 3-month detectable history for alcohol and drug presence. It's easy to gather, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil in width) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, considered an ideal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be acquired. In reference to head hair, we specify only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in processing drug test results in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the sample's initial processing into a laboratory's system. This stage verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift check for substance abuse. Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are pulled from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid). This makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a narrower detection scope.
  • Tough to deceive: Altering a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Records historical usage: It can demonstrate a usage pattern over time versus capturing only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine tests in Elwood, NE? Hair testing offers enhanced detection accuracy, delivering results that extend beyond the limitations of traditional urine analysis. The extended detection window ensures that even past substance use is recognized, providing a more complete evaluation of an individual's history.

Hair tests boast superiority over urine tests due to their reliability. Unlike urine testing, which may miss certain drug activities altogether, hair testing offers a robust check of drug presence in a person's system. This provides peace of mind for entities requiring dependable results in monitoring policies or individual compliance.

Extended Detection Window

In Elwood, NE, hair follicle testing effectively uncovers drug use up to 90 days prior, giving employers valuable insight into an individual's behavioral history. This elongated observation period plays a crucial role in screening, with hair effectively retaining traces of substance use far longer than other testing formats.

Employers gain a comprehensive perspective on substance use through hair tests' extended detection window. Providing a broader timeline, companies can better assess potential hires or current employees, identifying habitual patterns and assessing risk regarding drug-free workplace maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
