Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Farnam, Nebraska. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, our specialty in hair testing ensures numerous centers across the U.S. stand ready to assist. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for testing. We analyze hair for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer bespoke hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent for substance detection. Various employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over urine tests. For employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and probation officers, hair tests offer benefits such as up to 90-day detection, direct observation during collection, and resistance to alteration. While urine tests remain most effective for substances used within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, offering a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, somewhat resistant to adulteration, and simple to ship.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is recommended to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a laboratory's system. This process verifies that the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to discount drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are recovered from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation, as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: It offers a timeline of drug use, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Farnam, NE, hair follicle testing trumps traditional urine tests in numerous ways. Hair tests offer enhanced detection accuracy and reliability, key attributes in preventing drug use within the workplace. Their ability to identify substances over a prolonged period offers employers a clearer picture than a typical urine test.

Comparatively, urine tests may fall short in detection timeframes, capturing recent drug use but often missing patterns spanning months. Hair tests provide a deeper level of insight, leading to more informed decision-making.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Farnam, NE benefit from the extended detection period of hair follicle testing which can trace substance use up to a remarkable 90 days. This extended window offers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, making it a preferred choice for comprehensive screening.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
