Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Harvard, Nebraska. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert with hair testing centers in all cities Nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.
Recently, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests as a preferred option. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts select hair tests over standard urine assessments. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and probation services. Their primary advantage is an extended detection window for substance use, often up to 90 days, with observations during collection making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting usage within the last five days, urine tests remain most precise.

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. It offers a comprehensive history of substance use by retaining biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use within an approximately three-month timeframe. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and easy to transport.
A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, or tests that exceed 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be taken. When we mention head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).
Process Overview
The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.
Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step involves checking the sample’s seal and shipment, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that is not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.
Screening is a preliminary assessment to check for drugs of abuse. Whilst Screening offers a cost-effective approach to rule out drug consumption in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Samples that have presumptively positive results in Screening need secondary verification.
If a sample shows a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing highly complex.
Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.
