Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Hastings, Nebraska. Specializing in hair and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown or body. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent than urine tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair testing for zero-tolerance policies. The main advantage is its 90-day detection period, observed collection, and difficulty to tamper with, although urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a retrospective record of substances by embedding biomarkers within its growing strands. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch length, encompassing around 200 hairs (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a sample into the lab environment. It involves ensuring the sample’s seal and safe shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry that isn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in judicial environments. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at far lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that show a presumptive positive result are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which reflect a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced susceptibility to fraud: It is exceedingly tough to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a usage pattern over time rather than only indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hastings, NE, hair follicle testing is emerging as a superior alternative to urine tests. Hair testing offers noteworthy advantages in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which can miss recent substance use, hair analysis provides a longer detection period, capturing a comprehensive substance use history.

While traditional urine tests might only detect recent use, hair follicle tests assure greater reliability. This superior method enhances the ability to implement drug-free employment policies effectively, setting a higher testing standard.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
