In Hazard, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures reliable results. Nationwide, testing centers are available to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used for testing substances, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or additional tailored hair testing methods.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly supplanted former methods. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals show a preference for hair tests over regular urine tests. This test is particularly favorable for those adhering to strict drug policies. Offering a detection window of up to 90 days in a monitored collection setting, it virtually eliminates the chance of manipulation, although urine tests are still the most accurate for drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-duration record of substances by embedding markers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period of up to 3 months. It is easy to collect hair samples, difficult to tamper with them, and simple to transport.

A sample of around 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extra tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is suggested for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other types, such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The four major procedures in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any missing data entry that the electronic chain of custody system doesn’t handle.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for illicit drugs. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal acceptability. All samples with tentative positive results in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample tests as tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any tentative positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potential positive samples undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can uncover drug usage up to 90 days prior, unlike urine tests that provide a more limited detection timeframe.
  • High defense against tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers an overall timeline of drug consumption, rather than only detecting recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing options.
  • Diversity in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Tests often called "hair follicle tests" actually examine the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
