At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer thorough testing of hair samples for drug usage in Jackson, Nebraska. Our specialty lies in hair drug and alcohol tests, with centers nationwide ready to serve. Hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are generally needed. Hair evaluations can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other needs.

Over past years, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle exams. Many businesses, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for this over traditional urine analyses. It's favored by employers enforcing strict non-drug policies and probationary oversight. Its main perk is a longer drug use detection—up to 90 days—alongside difficult-to-tamper-with observations. But, for identifying recent (within 5 days) drug use, urine tests still hold accuracy superiority.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding markers within the strands as they grow. Collecting hair near the scalp can yield a detection range of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (similar in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, considered an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample weight. If no scalp hair is present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of handling a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial processing into a lab's system. This phase involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it's a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For presumptive positive samples at the Screening phase, additional hair is separated from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive readings undergo washing before confirmation, as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test renders the results more reliable.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
