Accredited Drug Testing offers a complete solution for hair follicle drug examinations in Lorenzo, Nebraska. Specializing in both drug and alcohol testing, we maintain testing sites in every city nationwide, where hair tests are available. Generally, hair from the head or body, 1.5 to 2 inches long, can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to special requests.

Over the years, the method for drug examinations has more often incorporated hair follicle drug exams. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer a hair test over the standard urine test. Hair follicle drug exams are ideal for employers upholding strict anti-drug use rules, judicial bodies, and probationary checks. The main advantage of a hair test is a broader detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, and nearly invulnerable to tampering. Yet, when testing for past five days' usage, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting both drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains markers of alcohol and drugs over time, capturing them in the strands’ fibers as they grow. A collection near the scalp can present up to a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. The collection process is uncomplicated, tampering is challenging, and shipping is straightforward.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg—the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG tests, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary analysis for detecting drugs of abuse. Although cost-efficient for negating drug presence in most samples, positive screenings necessitate confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. All samples testing positive in Screening require further validation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for further analysis in Extraction. This phase isolates drugs from hair at concentrations significantly lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Validated positive screenings undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples testing presumptively positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire procedural cycle from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection durations.
  • Cheating is challenging: Its design makes it tough to manipulate, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: These tests present a timeline of drug usage, offering more than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of spotting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair usually after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative testing approaches.
  • Inconsistencies: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the hair root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
