Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Louisville, Nebraska. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair assessments, with centers available in all major cities nationwide ready to conduct a hair examination. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or other body parts. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for various testing needs.

Recently, utilizing a hair follicle drug test for substance screening has become more common. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse counselors prefer a hair test over traditional urine diagnostics. Employers with no-drug policies, law courts, and those on probation lean towards hair tests due to their extensive detection timeframe—up to 90 days. Collected under observation, these tests are hard to manipulate, though urine tests remain superior for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates drug-related biomarkers within its strands as it grows, offering a comprehensive timeline of usage. Hair collected near the scalp can reflect up to roughly a 3-month period of alcohol and drug usage. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, constitutes 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent body hair sample may be used. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" covers all other hair forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in laboratory processing for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. Tasks include confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drug presence. Although cost-effective, a positive screen needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives require a secondary confirmation step.

If presumptive positive, more hair is pulled from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screens is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo pre-confirmation washing as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day span, unlike urine tests, which have shorter detection periods.
  • High resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Chronological data: They offer insights into a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify immediate use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing typically incurs greater expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
