Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Newcastle, Nebraska. Should you require a drug or alcohol analysis utilizing hair specimens, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in this method, maintaining test sites in every city across the nation capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is sufficient for analysis. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke options.

Over the past few years, hair follicle tests have become a staple for drug testing, replacing traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now require them for their superior benefits. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, criminal justice systems, and probation cases favor this method. Its key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed during collection, making falsification exceedingly difficult. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain optimal.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and other substances by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair shaft. When procured near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate for weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the laboratory for processing a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the primary processing of a sample into a lab’s framework. This process involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective method to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at substantially lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly hard to manipulate a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reflect a consistent pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly described as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
