For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar amount of body hair is an option. By head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s setup. This encompasses checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this stage, substances are separated from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most intricate method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples receive a wash prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
