Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Pleasanton, Nebraska. When in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, available in centers Nationwide. Testing usually requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, including body hair in some instances. Various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, can be detected with hair testing.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly become the norm for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse counselors now prefer this method over standard urine tests. Hair testing is invaluable for zero-tolerance workplaces, legal assessments, and probationary contexts. Its primary advantage is a 90-day detection window, observed collection, and difficulty in evasion. However, urine tests are still top-tier for detecting recent 5-day drug usage.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent method, hair testing unveils drug and alcohol utilization. It captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand in growth. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reflect a 3-month period of alcohol and drug detection. Its collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch cut of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for both screening and verification. For testing parameters such as EtG, additional metrics, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We propose using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair should be collected. By head hair, we specify only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure involves four pivotal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's initial entry into the laboratory’s records. This encompasses validating the integrity of the sample's seal and shipping protocol, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data input missing from an electronic custody documentation process.

Screening performs a preliminary evaluation for drug presence. It is a cost-effective approach to deter drug consumption in numerous samples. However, legal usability requires confirmation of any positive screen results. Any samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

For samples that return a positive Screening result, more hair is extracted from the original batch and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), highlighting hair drug screening as a challenging technique to execute.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are washed if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, every stage undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is substantially difficult to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the precision of results.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It provides a chronological record of drug use over time, beyond just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing options.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
