Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ravenna, Nebraska. For individuals seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our company offers specialized hair testing with centers available in cities nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is usually needed for testing. These hair tests can detect the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, the use of hair follicle drug tests has increasingly replaced traditional methods. Employers, courts, and addiction specialists now often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary bodies, and probation officers commonly use hair follicle tests. The primary advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with the collection process being observed, making it difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective means for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is uncomplicated, hard to tamper with, and easily sent.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in laboratory assessment of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial treatment of a sample within the laboratory’s framework. This step involves checking that the sample is correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional manual data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample is potentially positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This stage entails removing drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug analysis the most challenging technique to undertake.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All potentially positive samples are cleaned before final confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is verified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection timeframe: Hair drug examinations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to falsification: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: This method can disclose a timeline of drug use, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent intake: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
