Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair follicle testing services in Richland, Nebraska. For those requiring precise drug or alcohol detection through hair analysis, we provide expert testing nationwide. Hair specimens at least 1.5 to 2 inches long from the scalp are typically required, though body hair can suffice. Our analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and custom testing options tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as an alternative to traditional methods. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer it over urine tests. This method appeals to organizations with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and probation services, offering extended detection up to 90 days, monitored sample collection, and strong resistance against tampering attempts. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the go-to choice for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary handling of a sample within the lab’s framework. This process ensures the sample is sealed and transported correctly, generates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for potential drug use. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen result requires confirmation to be legally valid. All samples that indicate potential positives in Screening require secondary verification.

Should a sample show potential positives during Screening, more hair from the original specimen undergoes preparation for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are isolated from hair in lower concentrations than seen in alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluids), underscoring why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Every presumptive positive sample is washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited detection capabilities.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Attempting to tamper with a hair test is quite challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It records drug usage patterns over time, beyond recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair testing often incurs greater expenses than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
