Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Roca, Nebraska. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair analysis, and our testing facilities are available in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific testing requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly been a preferred method for screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists often opt for this method over standard urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies widely utilize these tests, including courts and individuals on probation, as they offer a prolonged detection window of up to 90 days and are observed during collection, making them hard to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can offer a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of about 200 strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory’s system. This includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves an initial quick inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to deceive: It's extremely tough to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over a duration, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
