In Saint Libory, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs. Whether you require drug or alcohol assessments, our expertise in hair analysis spans nationwide, with facilities ready to serve. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom testing options.

Over time, hair follicle testing has gained traction for drug detection. Many employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair over urine tests. Hair testing suits employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. Its main advantage is the extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, with monitored collection minimizing cheating, though urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 90-day history of alcohol and drug use. The collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for tests and confirmations. For EtG, additional substances, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the hair specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types, such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial intake of a specimen into the lab's database. This step ensures the sample's seal and shipment were intact, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial evaluation for illegal drugs. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug use within most samples, any positive screen must be validated to stand in legal proceedings. Samples yielding positive results in Screening definitely require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be positive during the Screening step, additional hair is drawn from the initial batch, readying it for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Any positive screening outcome is confirmed using technologies like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples flagged as positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete processing sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug evaluations are tough to manipulate, ensuring more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a timeline of drug use patterns over time, as opposed to just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
