Accredited Drug Testing provides all-encompassing hair follicle drug examinations in Skyline, Nebraska. Should you require an alcohol or drug test through hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, boasting testing facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are needed. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug examinations have been more commonly adopted in drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair screening over the traditional urine tests. Employers adhering to strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers often favor hair drug testing. The standout advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection window, which usually spans up to 90 days, ensuring a reliable collection method and making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate drug and alcohol intake over a period of up to 3 months. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to procure 150mg of the sample. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we only refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening undergoes a swift preliminary scan for substances of abuse. While this is an economical method to eliminate the likelihood of drug presence in the majority of samples, any positive screening result requires confirmation to be considered valid in a legal setting. Samples that return a presumptive positive during Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is sourced from the original specimen for preparation during the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than with alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of performing hair drug screenings.

Confirmation of each positive screening result is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair ranking and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which maintain a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Deceiving a hair drug test is exceedingly challenging, thus ensuring the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a chronological pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Outcome variations: Aspects like hair color and innate differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
