Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stamford, Nebraska. Whether it's hair or alcohol testing you need, our expertise in hair follicle analysis is supported by testing facilities in every city across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required, be it from the head or body. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized options, providing versatile testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become prevalent in recent times for drug testing purposes. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals are inclining towards hair tests over urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation rely on these tests. The key advantage is the extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests are preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs because it captures biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeline of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional panels, or over 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test outcome involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning relates to the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step covers ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any further data input not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a primary expedited evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, any positive screen must be substantiated for legal acceptability. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples deemed tentatively positive at the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much finer concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to implement.

The verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers chronological data: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, not just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
