Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Stockville, Nebraska. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide. We have facilities in every city that can perform these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, either from the scalp or body, for effective testing. Options include screenings for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom tests.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity for substance screening over traditional urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method. Organizations with strict no-tolerance policies and probationary services benefit from its extended detection capability—up to 90 days. It's conducted under observation, minimizing the chance of tampering and revealing more far-reaching use than urine tests limited to recent use.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a significant resource in identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers insight into substance use over extended periods by capturing biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month window to detect alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, extended panels, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four core phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a specimen into a lab's system, ensuring the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are suspected positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances where a sample is suspected positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the main specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are obtained from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Any positive screening outcome undergoes confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests typically offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to compromise: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It can display a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
