Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Valparaiso, Nebraska. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, look no further as Accredited Drug Testing has dedicated expertise in this area, with centers available in cities across the Nation to conduct hair tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body as an alternative. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a preferred method for drug detection. Nowadays, numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. Utilized by zero-tolerance organizations, the judicial system, and probation programs, the prominent advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, which can reach up to 90 days. Accompanied by supervised sample collection, it's nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair strands offer a prolonged record of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate a detection window spanning up to about three months for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from about 200 strands (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, it is advisable to gather 150mg of hair. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for ensuring the correct weight. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The drug testing protocol in the lab consists of four sequential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about initiating the sample into the lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample’s seal and shipment integrity, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry missing from an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for drugs. Though it is a cost-effective technique to potentially exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive outcome must be confirmed for legal admissibility. All samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo an additional confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Confirmation for any positive in Screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary preparations, like washing presumptive positive samples, are performed before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the window offered by urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological insights: Provides insight into drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other drug detection methods.
  • Variation potential: Hair growth rate and color, along with individual differences, can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
