For comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Venango, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to provider. Specializing in hair testing, our centers are spread across all U.S. cities, ready to conduct hair tests on 1.5 to 2 inch samples from the crown or body hair. Our tests cover drugs, ETG alcohol tests, and more tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction for monitoring drug use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists increasingly favor it over urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance policies and those overseeing probation use this method. The primary advantage of hair testing is its 90-day detection window, making cheating difficult. Despite this, for drug usage in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing offers a comprehensive view of substance use history by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for alcohol and other substances of up to approximately three months. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (face, underarms, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into the laboratory's system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally permissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in methods such as urine or oral fluids, explaining why hair drug screening is one of the more challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: It’s extremely difficult to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
