Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in West Point, Nebraska. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing spans the nation, with centers available in every city to conduct your test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts suffice. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method for conducting drug screenings. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the usual urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers increasingly rely on hair follicle testing. Its main advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it highly resistant to tampering. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise in detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of developing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can show a detection period for alcohol and drugs of approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for preliminary examinations and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of hair. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in lab processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with introducing a sample into a laboratory's database, ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not accommodated by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at substantially lower levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptive positive undergo cleaning before confirmation if required. The full process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug presence for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to counterfeit: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Gives historic data: It conveys a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
