In Willow Island, Nebraska, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services. Our expertise in hair testing is available nationwide, ensuring access to a center wherever you are. To proceed with a hair test, typically 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required either from the head or body. Our hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specific testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence for drug screening processes. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for this test instead of the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are favored by those with stringent no-drug policies due to their detection capabilities, often up to 90 days. These tests are also tamper-proof and yield highly reliable results. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the texture of the hair as it grows. By collecting hair samples close to the scalp, it is possible to achieve an approximate detection period of three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, it pertains to scalp hair alone, whereas body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into a lab’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for drug use. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test tentatively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at markedly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Positive screening results are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks longitudinal data: It provides a record of drug usage patterns over time rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth differences may impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test studies the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
