Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Blue Diamond, Nevada. If you need a hair drug or alcohol examination, our company excels in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. Generally, a hair sample from the crown or body is needed, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a more common method for drug assessment. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing benefits zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation by providing a longer detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring integrity and reducing the chance of manipulation. However, for tracing recent drug intake within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers within the fibers of a hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideally suited for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair is exclusively for scalp hair, while body hair refers to all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test comprises four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of incorporating a sample into the laboratory's system, which includes verifying a sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a brief evaluation for potential drug abuse. While it is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Samples with presumptive positive results at this stage necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is prepared for Extraction from the primary specimen. Here, drug extraction occurs at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening poses the greatest methodological challenge.

Confirmation of a positive screening result happens via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: It identifies drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Counteracts tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Timeline insight: It sheds light on an individual's drug use pattern over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Detects non-recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
