Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Bunkerville, Nevada. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, we’re experts in hair testing, and offer testing centers across all U.S. cities for convenient hair test access. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or various other specialized hair testing choices.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are utilized by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making them hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a beneficial method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers in its fibers as the hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect hair samples, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing around 200 strands of hair (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is preferred. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. "Head hair" indicates only scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Four primary stages in lab processing for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initial sample processing into a lab’s system, including ensuring the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes a preliminary rapid inspection for abuse drugs. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for court admission. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require confirmed verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the toughest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that offer a narrower detection period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a pattern of drug utilization over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
