In Dry Lake, Nevada, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing. Our expertise in hair testing is backed by nationwide testing centers, making it easy to conduct hair tests for substance use. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp is needed, but body hair can be used in some situations. Hair analysis is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized tests.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged, becoming a preferred method for employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists over traditional urine tests. Its use is widespread among employers with strict drug use policies, judicial entities, and probation cases. The key advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, offering a secure and reliable collection process that is difficult to tamper with, unlike urine tests that are better for detecting recent usage.

What it is, How it works

Testing of hair has become recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of these substances by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When acquired near the scalp, hair can allow detection for approximately three months concerning alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond ten, 150mg of the material is suggested. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test sample in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially entering a sample into a laboratory's framework. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra information entry absent from an electronic custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to deter drug use in most samples, a positive indication necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that appear positive in Screening need an additional confirmation process.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are abstracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumed positivity are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to tamper with: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Reflects usage patterns: Provides a record of drug use throughout an extensive interval, not only recent uptake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to find recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Referred to at times as "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Dry Lake, NV
Compared to traditional urine testing, hair follicle tests provide numerous advantages, particularly in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. The extensive detection window of hair tests captures substance use histories up to 90 days, unlike the shorter timeframe of urine tests, making them a superior tool for evaluating long-term substance use.

Furthermore, hair tests are less susceptible to tampering, offering more credible results than urine tests, which can be manipulated. For employers and court systems in Dry Lake, NV, prioritizing accuracy and integrity, hair follicle testing serves as a leading method for comprehensive substance evaluation.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
