Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elgin, Nevada. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal courts, and probationary individuals often use hair tests due to their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, which are collected under supervision and are very difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most precise method for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by incorporating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. If gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening deals with an initial rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, more hair is drawn from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen finding is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Shows historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests normally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
