Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Imlay, Nevada. Whether you need a hair or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing with centers across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent years, the preference for conducting drug screenings has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists often request hair tests over standard urine methods. Hair follicle tests are favored by drug-free workplaces, courts, and probationary programs. Their key advantage is an extended 90-day detection window and difficulty in manipulation. However, when testing for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the hair as it grows. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can present up to an approximately 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide a sample of 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest checking the weight of the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be taken. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for a drug test outcome consists of four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid verification for drugs of misuse. Screening offers a cost-efficient method to discount drug use in most samples, however, a positive screen must be validated to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a tentative positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are tentatively positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are very hard to fake, increasing result precision.
  • Provides historical data: They reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
