Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing throughout Moapa Valley, Nevada. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screenings, our expertise spans hair testing with locations in every city nationwide. Testing typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored analyses.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has surged in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer it over traditional urine tests. Hair tests suit employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation situations due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days and secure collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests still hold leading accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substances by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within an approximately 3-month timeframe. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, suited for screening and confirmation. For EtG additions, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be gathered. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the lab consists of four principal actions: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and concludes any extra data entries missing from an electronic custody chain.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an efficient method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive indication must be verified for courtroom applicability. Samples marking positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a Screening suggest a positive result, additional hair is sourced from the specimen and made ready for Extraction. Here, drug compounds are extracted from the hair at concentrations considerably less than those in urine or saliva samples. This complexity makes hair drug screening a challenging process.

Any screening-positive results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair testing traces drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter periods of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more dependable findings.
  • Tracks historical usage: It illustrates a trend of drug usage across time spans, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to track recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair requires around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is typically costlier compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Drug metabolite concentrations in hair can be impacted by hair color and personal hair growth differences.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the testing focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
